Record of Excellence of the Maharishi School .

Here are a few samples of the remarkable achievements of the Maharishi School , where all the students practice the Transcendental Meditation technique. These achievements show a remarkable record of greater ability of autonomous, creative thinking.

1995

  • Grades 9–12 scored in the 99th percentile in the Iowa Tests of Educational Development–both nationally and in Iowa . This standardized test which is taken by high school students through out the United States shows that students at Maharishi School scored better than 99% of other schools in the United States .
  • The grade 8 team won first place at the Odyssey of the Mind state competition and went on to the World Competition. Odyssey of the Mind is a problem solving competition sponsored by IBM.
  • First place in the Iowa State History Fair-Group Media Competition senior division. At the National History Fair, their project was named the outstanding project among senior division entrants from Iowa .
  • First place in the Iowa Poetry Association’s 1995 High School Contest.
  • Winner of the Iowa Junior Chess Championship.
  • Winner of the State “Young Writer of the Year” award.
  • First place at the Iowa Educational Media Association in the Black & White Photography category.
  • Maharishi School students won the State Class 1-A individual golf champion and the State Class 1-A singles tennis championship.

1996

  • Over the past five years 95% of the graduates of Maharishi School have gone on to attend four-year colleges and universities around the country.For the second year in a row Grades 9­–12 scored in the 99th percentile in the Iowa Tests of Educational Development–both nationally and in Iowa .
  • First place was won by two 7th grade teams in the Iowa Odyssey of the Mind competition, qualifying the School to represent Iowa at the World Finals for a third year in a row. One team then went on to finish 6th in the world at the world finals.
  • Ranked #1 in Iowa class 1A in the American School Mathematics Exam.
  • Highest rating in both district and state competitions was received by all of the Maharishi   School groups who competed in the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group Competition.
  • State Class 1-A singles tennis title was won by a Maharishi School student for the second year in a row.
  • Class 1-A golf championship was won by the Maharishi School team.

1997

  • First place in American High School Math Exam (AHSME) in Iowa division 2A for the second year in a row. The score was 312 which was 13 points higher than any other school in the division. One student was a State Champ Team member two years in a row.
  • “Best of Show” award at the Southeast Iowa Superconference and two first place awards in the photo and pastels categories.
  • First place in the Junior Physical Science division in the Southeast Iowa Science and Engineering Fair. Second place was awarded to a team of three Maharishi Schools students and Third place went to student at the school. Another project, which studied how the topical application of turmeric can facilitate blood clotting to help wounds heal, received a second place honorable mention and a special award from the Navy for outstanding achievement and excellence. Maharishi School students won a total of eleven awards at the Fair.
  • At the Iowa History Day four girls were chosen as alternates to go the National History Day Competition. The 7th grade team entry was entitled “I Have a Voice: The Fight for Women’s Suffrage.”

1998

  • In the American High School Math Exam (AHSME), Maharishi School has been the state champion for the past two years. Its students again placed first this year setting a new school team record. AHSME is the most prestigious math competition in the U.S. High school teams are ranked by the sum of their top three scorers. Maharishi School ’s first place team scored 327,which was 23 points higher than the 2nd place team score. Over 250,000 of the best math students from every U.S. state and Canadian province participated. Over 10,000 students from about 150 schools in Iowa took the exam.
  • At the Odyssey of the Mind state finals, the eleventh grade team finished in first place and took 6th place at the World Finals in Orlando , Florida .
  • At the Iowa Student Media Festival, Maharishi School took two of the top three prizes.
  • At the Iowa High School Speech Association All-State Festival, Maharishi School was awarded the prestigious Sweepstakes trophy for the school with the highest number of outstanding performances invited to the festival. Over 400 high schools in Iowa compete in this competition.

1999

  • In the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) six 11th grade students scored in the 99th percentile, which qualifies them to be considered for National Merit Scholarships.
  • At the Iowa State Academic Decathlon, a Maharishi School student received a perfect score of 1000 points to win first place in the state for her speech on “Single Gender Education.” She also placed first in the Interview Category with a score of 970 points
  • For the fourth year in a row, Maharishi Upper School ’s Math team placed 1st in their division in Iowa in the American High School Math Exam (AHSME).
  • At the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair, Maharishi School students won four first place medals, three second place medals, four third place medals, and a special award.
  • One Maharishi School student was named the Iowa Junior Chess Champion for the second time.
  • Five entries from Maharishi School received outstanding performance ratings at the state level of the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group Competition and were invited to perform at the All-State Festival. At the All-State Festival Maharishi Upper School Choral Reading won the “Critics Choice” and the All-State Banner.
  • Teen People Magazine had an article on Maharishi School in the April 1999 issue, which gave the Maharishi School the title of “ Cool School of the Month.”
  • The “Best of Show” was awarded to a Maharishi Schools student at the Southeast Iowa Superconference Art Show. Maharishi School students also won first place in the Sculpture/Ceramics and Photography division.
  • For only the second time in the 70 year history of Iowa high school tennis, a school has won the celebrated Triple Crown. Students at Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield swept this year’s Class 1-A titles in singles, doubles and team competitions.

2000

  • Out of a senior class of 40 students seven were recognized as National Merit Scholar Finalists.
  • This Fall all the classes in the Upper School scored in the 99th percentile in the Iowa Test of Educational Development. This is the 5th year in a row that this has been achieved.
  • Three teams of Maharishi School students placed in the top 10 at the World Finals of Destination Imagination (Odyssey of the Mind). The students took 2nd, 4th, and 8th place in the World. This is the best any Iowa team has ever done at the World Competition.
  • An upper School student placed first in the Individual Documentary category at the State History Fair.
  • At the Iowa High School Speech Association, Maharishi School was awarded the Critics Choice award. Over 300 high schools compete for the Critic’s Choice, the best of the best award, and over the past decade the Maharishi School has won more Critic’s Choice awards than any other school in the state.

2001 to 2007

The examples given above continued in 2001 to 2007.  The Maharishi School has won more awards in the arts and sciences than any other school in Iowa . It has won more "Critics Choice" awards in the Theater Arts than any other school in the history of Iowa . The school has also won 41 state championships in Odyssey of the Mind and more Designation Imagination competitions than any other school in the state. The school won the Global Finals of Destination Imagination three times and has had more top-ten finishes than any other school in the world. In 2007, a team from the Maharishi School were once again world champions. For three years in a row, the Maharishi School students have won first place in the Congressional High School Art Contest. In the field of photography, they regularly sweep the awards in the Iowa Educational Media Association. In the Junior Division of the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair, Maharishi school students have won eight grand champion awards in the last decade.
